When you use a VM, it is very important to remember that the VM is not a permanent place to save your work. When your reservation ends, your VM and all data in it are deleted. To save your work, you must store it somewhere outside the VM. Using RDC, it's easy to save your work to your local computer. Remember always to do so, or you will lose your work.
If your local computer is your own computer, you can save your work to its internal hard disk, or to any other disk connected to your computer. RDC will make your local computer's disks available to your VM just as if they were directly connected to it. You can see them in Windows Explorer windows the same way as any other disk. Files can be saved to these disks by all the usual methods - drag and drop, cut and paste, or by choosing them as the destination in Save dialogs. In scripts (such as Stata 'do' files), your local disks are described in UNC syntax, with all your local disks mounted at "\\tsclient".
If you are on a computer that people share, such as a university lab computer, you should save your work to a removable drive (like a flash drive) or somewhere on the network (like your AFS disk space). To save your work to AFS follow these instructions:
1. Double click on the My AFS Disk Space icon
2. Enter your CCID and password in the dialog and you will see the following result. Don't press Enter until you're finished using AFS.
3. To access your AFS storage open the Windows Explorer and look for the U drive.
